Alongside our Women for Media Research series and Women for Media database, the Women’s Leadership Institute Australia works directly with a range of media organisations to support their gender equity efforts.
Media disparity is not a new problem, but it is one that requires attention and focus. By excluding women’s expert voices from opinion columns, we reinforce stereotypes and deprive our public conversations of diversity of thought.
In February 2024, WLIA was pleased to partner with the Australian Financial Review for a fascinating and practical webinar supporting more women to contribute op-eds.
104 accomplished women joined us for an open and very practical discussion with a distinguished panel:
- Carol Schwartz AO – Chair, Women’s Leadership Institute Australia
- Cosima Marriner – Managing Editor, AFR
- Emma Connors – Senior Editor & Writer, AFR
- Kevin Chinnery – Opinion Editor & Editorial Lead Writer, AFR
- Amy McDonnell – General Manager, Goal Group
The conversation covered what AFR editors want to see, the op-ed process and focus, how to craft a compelling opinion, as well as common myths and mistakes.
